Mary K.'s Story

After graduation I went to work in a small insurance agency located at 47th and Stockton Blvd. Spent the next 10 yrs working in the agency. I also became a professional bridesmaid with 13 weddings on my resume. In the dictionary, next to "Always a bridesmaid" you will find my picture. Traveled a little, but not much. In 1986 my son was born and at that time I made the decision to raise him by myself (with the help of my parents). The agency where I worked sold to a much larger agency so I went to work at USAA Insurance Co. At USAA I never knew who was going to be at the other end of the line since they insure high profile people. The job was interesting and a met a great number of people that I never thought I would meet or have any contact with. Movie stars, musicians, etc. My son attended Samuel Kennedy and I volunteered in his classroom on my day off. It was a trip sitting in the back of my old classrooms. And seeing some of my favorite books sitting on the library shelves. After I left USAA I took care of a former classmate, Don Stark, for a yr. He was terminally ill and both of us thought it was rather ironic that I was taking care of him and neither of us gave the other the time of day when we were in school. I also started volunteering at Southpointe Christian Center's Food Closet. I was the youngest volunteer. Everyone else was between 65-85 yrs old. Taking care of Don started a new chapter in my life. One that was the most difficult and heart breaking, but also on...Expand for more
e that I am extremely proud of. In '99 my grandma was diagnosed with cancer and given a short period of time to live. Will moved in with my parents and I moved in with my Grandma and my Aunt. She passed away at home on Thanksgiving Day 1999. During the holidays I managed Hickory Farms stores and the rest of the time I started taking care of those that couldn't take care of themselves. Including a Pearl Harbor survivor with different types of skin cancer, a double stroke survivor with colon cancer. I also took care of my uncle who had been a Lt with the sheriff's dept and wanted to go to Hooters all the time. And finally my mom. In my opinion the most precious gift you can give someone is to take care of them when they can no longer take care of themselves. Mom passed away Feb 26, 2008, the day after my 50th birthday. Mom always wanted me to "get a job with the state because its a secure career". She was a life long DMV employee and thought that was the way to go. On May 22, 2008 I started working in a field office as a motor veh field rep and everyday its an adventure. Just like working at USAA, I never know who is going to approach my counter. I have a better memory than a lot of people and its always a trip to see how people have changed yet stay the same. People ask if I'd like to go thru my jr hi and sr hi years and my response is "Oh God no!" There are people that I wish I had stayed in contact with. With any luck I'll be able to get in touch with them in the near future.
